Earlier this week, Eanes ISD also had an issue where West Ridge Middle School students saw an icon for an inappropriate website on a teacher’s desktop. The icon itself wasn’t inappropriate, but according to a screenshot referenced “free porn videos.”

I’m not saying that I have inappropriate icons on my Desktop, but I can tell you that I have a completely separate login on my computer that I’m using for online lessons.

Eanes ISD is a very tony (rich white) city that butts up against Austin.

Right? It’s so stupidly easy to set up multiple log ins I can’t imagine not doing it if you have to Zoom or use your home machine for work.

Stupidly easy, and yet so rarely done. The single login use for home thing has been very hard to shake.

Our work computers used to only allow logins through the domain, so there was no easy way to set up an alternate login on my work laptop. They eventually relaxed that policy, but it’s still enforced on my son’s school laptop. He was asking me about alternate operating systems and booting off an external hard drive a few weeks ago. Last week he excitedly asked me to come to his room to see something. He had Linux Mint running on his school laptop from a thumb drive.

He made me proud . :D

I run my day-to-day computer life on a non-admin account. Sure, I have to put in the password a lot, but it also prevents things from getting installed in the background without my knowledge.

I once logged into a school computer to print notes from my personal google Drive account. Google did it’s thing and kept my Chrome profile logged in even though I had logged out of Drive, so all my bookmarks, history... were displayed on this computer. I was logged into it for about a year before a student let me know. Thankfully Oppositelock is my strangest internet habit.

All that integration is bad. No, Google, I don’t always want to have all my stuff everywhere I go.

Bad: Your students find your porn bookmarks

Worse: They send you theirs

Even worse: They’re the same links

One of the early browsers would save your login information no matter what login was used on the computer. We were constantly reminding people to log out of their e-mail before logging off the computer or the next person to log in would have access to their personal e-mail accounts.

To give you an idea of how bad those outcomes would have been, this was at an all girls religious school.

Before we got our SLB laptops, they made a specific mention not to torrent on the computer, or anything like that. Well once I got my computer, I signed into my personal gmail account, well apparently that synced my browser history. I typed in “t” and google was like we’ll take it from here and had autocompleted the website as “thepiratebay.org” I quickly un- synced everything after that.

Always, always, ALWAYS use incognito mode / guest browsing / whatever it may be called, when logging into a computer you don’t own.

That sounds like my kid. He bought a kindle and hacked it to run google play. Then he hacked mine to do the same. I’m pretty sure he has a anonymous account shilling out video game hacks for call of duty.

Shit, I don’t even like sharing my desktop during office meetings because who knows what email or Skype message I may get (not inappropriate usually, but might be sensitive / about an employee / etc)

Which is precisely why I use a separate login. Nothing but school stuff, notifications turned off.

Definitely!  That’s what I’ve done since that incident.
